How do foreigners work legally in China?

Work Permit System for Foreigners Working in China has been implemented nation-widely since April 1st, 2017 and foreigners may get different permits and certificates from relevant authorities in China compared with previous experience.

In order to work legally in China, foreigners must obtain a work permit and a work-type residence permit in accordance with relevant regulations. No entities or individuals shall employ foreigners without those two permits.

With the help of the notice you can apply for the type-Z visa at a Chinese embassy or consulate. With the visa, you are allowed to get into China.

Once arrived, you can apply for the Foreigner’s Work Permit at your local Administration Of Foreign Experts Affairs (外国专家局). Here, you get the first permit.

With the work permit, you can apply for your work-type residence permit at your local Public Security Bureau Exit-Entry Administration (公安局出入境管理中心). Here, you get the second permit.
